چکیده

Most existing natural language database interfaces (nldbs) were designed to be used with database systems that provide very limited facilities for manipulating time-dependent data, and they do not support adequately temporal linguistic mechanisms (verb tenses, temporal adverbials, temporal subordinate clauses, etc.). The database community is becoming increasingly interested in temporal database systems, that are intended to store and manipulate in a principled manner information not only about the present, but also about the past and future. When interfacing to temporal databases, supporting temporal linguistic mechanisms becomes crucial. We present a framework for constructing natural language interfaces for temporal databases (nltdbs), that draws on research in tense and aspect theories, temporal logics, and temporal databases. The framework consists of a temporal intermediate representation language, called top, an hpsg grammar that maps a wide range of questions involving temporal mechanisms to appropriate top expressions, and a provably correct method for translating from top to tsql2, tsql2 being a recently proposed temporal extension of the sql database language. This framework was employed to implement a prototype nltdb.

This paper focuses on a theory of tense and aspect the representation of time in natural language that attempts a formal representation of the relevant lin guistic devices as implication rules in rst order logic It presents a rich ontology as far as verb aspect is concerned distinguishing between complex patterns and vagueness Examples and conclusions are drawn from the com parison between Engl...

The Effect of Direct, Indirect, and Negotiated Feedback on the Tense/Aspect of EFL Learners in Writing

L2 written corrective feedback has been investigated from different perspectives in SLA research (e.g. Ahmadian & Tajabadi, 2015; Bitchener & Knoch, 2010; Ferris, 2006). Taking the cognitive and sociocultural paradigms into account, the aims of the current study are twofold: Firstly, it attempts to find if corrective feedback is effective in improving the linguistic accuracy of L2 learners' ten...

Concept-based Instruction and Teaching English Tense and Aspect to Iranian School Learners

The present study examines the role of Gal’perin’s Concept-based Instruction (CBI) as a pedagogical approach in teaching cognitive grammar-based (CG-based) concepts of tense and aspect to EFL students. Following the sociocultural theory of L2 Acquisition (SCT), arming L2 learners with scientific concepts can lead to L2 development by deepening their understanding and raising awareness of L2 str...

The Semantics and Acquisition of Time in Language

This dissertation is about the structure of temporal semantics and children’s acquisition of temporal language. It argues for the importance of investigating semantics both at the abstract level of linguistic structures and at the concrete level of the time-course of acquisition, as these two levels provide natural constraints for each other. With respect to semantics, it provides a computation...

Verbs in Applied Linguistics Research Article Introductions: Semantic and syntactic analysis

This study aims to investigate the semantic and syntactic features of verbs used in the introduction section of Applied Linguistics research articles published in Iranian and international journals. A corpus of 20 research article introductions (10 from each journal) was used. The corpus was analysed for the syntactic features (tense, aspect and voice) and semantic meaning of verbs. The finding...

A Computational Model of the Semantics of Tense and Aspect

The PUNDIT natural-language system processes references to situations and the intervals over which they hold using an algorithm that integrates the analysis of tense and aspect. For each tensed clause, PUNDIT processes the main verb and its grammatical categories of tense, perfect, and progressive in order to extract three complementary pieces of temporal information. The first is whether a sit...
